The Thrifty Artist

Posted October 18, 2011

Sometimes a new notebook or sketchbook just isn’t in the budget. The computer is a nice option but isn’t as intimate as an artist’s notebook. And sometimes it’s much easier to lug around then the laptop. Though I enjoy creating my artwork and poetry on my computer a new book always seems to possess an aura of inspiration. I often find myself excited over the possibilities my new book will give me and how it may take on a character of its own; whether it’s store bought or hand crafted. Below is a cheap and effective way to create your own notebook or sketchbook. I have used both methods. However, I often use a duo-tang because of the pockets.

Materials:
Cover: duo-tang folder or (manilla) file folder

3 hole punch

Binding: brads, or staples

Paper: stationary/specialty, filler, or plain (sketchbook)

Computer

Printer

Steps

1.)Choose cover (e.g duo-tang folder or manilla folder), binding and stationary/paper template.

2.) punch holes in paper with 3-hole punch

3.)assemble notebook or sketchbook by fastening pages with brads or staples. Or putting the pages in the center of a duo-tang folder. (NOTE: if you choose to use a file folder be sure to fold the front cover back, other wise it doesn’t see to cooperate well.

4. DECORATE!!!!

To the [Artist] Community

Posted September 29, 2011

The canvas is always open and barren without contributors and insight from people who'd like to be part of a community whose dynamic is love, creativity and growth. I also wanted to bullet point some things available to artists via my site. This project began and will continue as a labor of  love. It'll grow as I continue to grow.

I'm a student who enjoys creative expression thus I cannot provide monetary payment to my contributors. However, I try to help artists in other ways, by stimulating creativity and keeping my eyes open to opportunities to help us starving artist in this difficult economy.

My voice is my art speaking candidly about things that I feel strongly about. And the things that do not have to be in this world but are here. I create to speak to others because I feel that art knows how to communicate what is on our hearts even if we'd rather not. The arts are the dialects I choose to speak.

What dialect do you speak? You can speak it here. How do you love the world you live in despite all its flaws? Why do you create? If you are searching for artistic purpose share your vision and your work with the canvas. My site is for you.

Also the canvas is looking into options to give this project a more community oriented feel. I am always open to suggestions. So please feel free to e-mail your submissions, concerns, questions, ideas, etc.

As always I look forward to hearing from you--

Love Write,

Pieces of the Creative Puzzle: A mini-canvas

Posted September 14, 2011

Well since this is the first post in this category I'll supply a brief introduction. Whenever the canvas finds new outlets and tools for expression you can expect to find them in our Artist "Arsenal". This is our collection and supply area where we keep all our "weapons of mass creation"(tools).

Artist Trading Cards

This is my first drawing from my ATC (Artist Trading Card) "deck". I found these at my local Michael's store and the concept intrigued me. A great compact way to share our work with others and promotion tool. They run 12-20 in a pack and have recently gone up in price, which isn't surprising. But there are always alternatives a clipped coupon or make your own. They are exactly 2.5x 3.5, in case you wanted to make your own "deck".

What began as an exhibit by artist M. Vanci Stirnemann has become a movement if you will. Most cards are traded not sold but there are always exceptions. Either way they serve as a non-traditional business card in a sense because the artist can include their contact info and or brief info about the piece. These blank card decks come in an array of packages: assorted, vellum, canvas, bristol, illustration board, water color, etc.

For more information  visit: ATC Cards

I carry a little book of ideas with me to help my creativity. It began as a creative writing assignment about 7 years ago and I've continued to utilize the tool and the practice. About 3.5 volumes later they still manage to stimulate my creativity in sketch and verse. Moleskine is my favorite brand but quite expensive. Actually all you need is a simple little book to write down your ideas in their rawest forms and then polish them at a later time. It's convient when you are always on the go cause you can write the idea/concept or verse/stanza however it comes. I've also used it as a "calling card".

LOVE WRITE: pun friendly insight(s)....

Posted August 22, 2011

Love Write--Sometimes I'll find gems in the matrix of my mind. I call my mind a couple different things at times just because I have a tendency to hang out there and over analyze things. Anyways last year the word pair "love write" filled my mind. It began as a personal motto and then I decided to use it for my poetry blog. The word pair spawned the name of the disclaimer page (just because the word disclaimer isn't accessible in my mind and I wanted to convey the importance of respecting artists' hearts). Love Write, also spawned a poem called "Write Here"  the phrase is at the end of the poem. I enjoyed the pun so much I added separate pieces. Most of us have seen the home decor signs of Live, Laugh, Love well the writer in me took it another step and you can see in the canvas words album located in "the cave"    Live Write & Laugh Write. *~*(c) j.ajabad 2011*~*

ART is  [always] WRITE: I had one more left, lol! Hmm, maybe I'll scrap that one?! I may have overkilled the Write/Right pun, but it's imperative that we have fun with our craft or we become sellouts. I have noticed on many occasions that I sometimes get too obsessed with getting readers/viewers for the pieces I create. Though I enjoy sharing my work, that joy can easily be rdiluted if we do it for all the wrong reasons.

Love Write--Respect the artists' hearts. It also means/reminds [our] readers/viewers that hate and fear cannot exist if you love write. Patience my friends and endure....

In the meantime thumb through the canvas. Scribble your thoughts about this and other musings which intrigue. My canvas is your canvas, always. Bookmark it. Also the canvas is always has open submission. You can submit your artwork, poetry, and or blog/site. One of the goals of this site is to create a community vibe. For submissions, suggestions, questions, comments, concerns e-mail the canvas: onecanvas_onesoul@yahoo.com. Alright now it's a wrap.

Love Write,

(are you getting tired of the phrase yet?)

open mic+karaoke+workshop: the WrapUP!

Posted August 12, 2011

Tuesday One Canvas One Soul hosted an open mic. Other than mini-notebooks and the above autogragph board, we had paper to satisfy the creative spark. The turn out was small but everyone read a poem or performed. It warmed my heart to see a shy brother and sister duo gravitate toward the limelight. At their eager hands the open mic became a sort of karaoke. They sang the likes of Bruno Mars and Usher. At one point they became my co-hosts which made the experience even more fun.

Canvas Pieces Read:

Art is Eternal

Where Does the Day Flee To?

Three people read pieces they had written on the spot, which gave the open mic a workshop feel. I especially was exited when a woman wrote a piece about "Faith" in two minutes and she had never penned a poem before. This fulfilled a canvas goal: to inspire others to create and express themselves.

Look for more creative endeavors to fulfill the Canvas. Until next time go out and create.

Love Write,

j.ajabad
